Former US president Donald Trump holds six figures’ worth of digital assets in an Ethereum ( ETH ) wallet, according to a financial disclosure filing with the Office of Government Ethics. The wallet is valued somewhere between $250,001 and $500,000 and contains various types of digital assets such as ERC-20 tokens and nonfungible tokens (NFTs).
Trump’s Hostile Stance Towards Crypto
Trump is known for his hostile stance towards the crypto markets. In May 2018 he gave orders to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to “go after Bitcoin [for fraud].” Days later Mnuchin was quoted as saying that the Treasury Department will enforce “very, very strong” regulations on cryptocurrencies to ensure they’re not used for illicit purposes. In an interview three years later, Trump said he owned zero cryptocurrencies and described them as “a disaster waiting to happen.”
Launching NFTs in December 2022
In December 2022, Trump announced his intention to run for the 2024 presidential election and shortly after launched a collection of NFTs on the Ethereum-based platform OpenSea.
